Policy Advocacy Speech Topics - How to Tackle These Tough Issues
Policy Advocacy Speech Topics - How to Tackle These Tough IssuesMany members of Congress and many members of the general public have been amazed to hear a number of young lawyers, pundits, and political analysts who spend their time discussing issues of policy and law; they are now exploring their legal minds on the nation's most important policy issues. The current trend is for these folks to try and turn policy into law. Sometimes this is accomplished with a study of the political processes but sometimes it is accomplished by studying the legislative process. The key to the success of any advocacy speech topics is the ability to explore both the legislative processes. This is a critical skill to have because it is imperative that you know when to consult with lawyers or why you need to consult with them. All too often, I have heard members of Congress to tell the American people, 'If we do not pass a bill, then it is law' or some other bogus statistic. This is BS!Unfortunately, ther e are no laws regarding legislation. If the Congress were to pass legislation (as it does not) then the legislative process is over. All legislation requires a certain amount of time to work its way through the legislative process. It is important to understand the different types of legislation that the Congress has considered during its time in session and in committee. If you are not well versed in this matter, then the advice I would offer would be to make an effort to familiarize yourself with each type of legislation. The real challenge for a lawyer is to be able to explain the need for support legislation to his or her client. Even if you cannot convince the client, you must be able to help the client understand the importance of the issue. Otherwise, the client will simply ignore the problem. The best chance you have to convince the client of the issue and of the need for support legislation is to address it from the point of view of a legislator. For this reason, it is very i mportant to emphasize the fact that the member of Congress who wants to support legislation is not being 'blind sided.' You must recognize that this legislation is not being requested by just anyone. Some members of Congress have worked very hard to be a part of the legislative process. These individuals need help and you can provide this help in a very effective way by telling your client about the work that other members of Congress have done to support legislation. Do not forget to tell your client about the lobbyists who also support legislation. Even when lobbying for a particular piece of legislation, these people have no right to take advantage of their fellow legislators. The lobbyist is only seeking a piece of legislation that will improve his or her client's situation.Even if you are no longer a lawyer, remember that, just as in court, it is not appropriate to talk in hypotheticals about supporting legislation when you are representing a client. Only use hypotheticals, if y ou know what the consequences of supporting legislation will be.Policy advocacy speech topics must do one of two things: First, they must educate the listener. Second, they must persuade the listener to support the legislation. Law firms such as mine need both of these skills in order to succeed.
